U.S. President Donald Trump [AP=Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 1st (local time) regarding a new negotiation proposal conveyed by Iran through mediator Pakistan, "They want a deal, but I don't find it satisfactory."
President Trump made these remarks to reporters at the White House before departing for an event in Florida.
However, he did not specify which parts of Iran's proposal were unsatisfactory.
President Trump also pointed out that it would be difficult to reach a final agreement because Iran's leadership is still divided.
He stated, "There has been progress in negotiations via phone, but I'm not sure if they will reach that (agreement). There is tremendous discord (within the leadership)," adding, "The Iranian leadership is very divided. There are two or three, perhaps four groups."
"They all want a deal, but they're all messed up," he added.
Regarding the 60-day deadline, after which he can conduct a war without congressional approval, President Trump criticized the War Powers Act, which stipulates such terms, saying, "It's totally unconstitutional. This law has never been applied. Why should we be an exception?"
Earlier, Defense Secretary Pete Hegses (War Department) argued in a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee the previous day that the 60-day deadline, which falls on this day, cannot include the current ceasefire period, thus claiming the deadline has not yet arrived.
