The People Power Party's Nomination Management Committee announces the nomination results for the June 3 by-election candidates. [Yonhap News]
Yang Hyang-ja, a Supreme Council member, was selected as the People Power Party's candidate for Gyeonggi Province Governor in the June 3 local elections on the 2nd.
The party's Central Nomination Management Committee announced that following two days of party member voting (50%) and a general public opinion poll (50%) conducted until the previous day, Supreme Council member Yang was decided as the final candidate, defeating former MBC announcer Lee Sung-bae and former lawmaker Ham Jin-gyu.
Supreme Council member Yang is known for her "high school diploma success story," having set a record as Samsung Electronics' first female executive with only a high school education.
She entered politics in 2016 when former President Moon Jae-in, then leader of the Democratic Party, recruited her as a female talent, making her an outside figure from the Democratic Party.
Candidate Yang will face Democratic Party candidate Choo Mi-ae in the Gyeonggi Province Governor election.
From the conservative opposition parties, former lawmaker Cho Eung-chun of the Reform Party is also running as a candidate.
For this reason, the possibility of a candidate unification between the People Power Party and the Reform Party in the future is drawing attention.
Regarding unification, Candidate Yang told reporters after the primary debate on the 28th of last month, "Any force that wants to prevent the ruling party's unilateral progress should unite."
However, the Reform Party and Candidate Cho are currently distancing themselves from unification discussions.
With the confirmation of the Gyeonggi Province Governor candidate, the People Power Party has concluded its nominations for all 16 provincial and city governor elections.
