As the Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on the legality of national security and import tariffs, President Donald Trump warned that U.S. national security would be "destroyed" if tariffs are eliminated.
In a detailed post on Truth Social on Monday afternoon, Trump stated, "Remember, when America is doing well, the world is doing well. In other words, if the Supreme Court rules against us on this national security privilege, we are absolutely destroyed!"
President Trump has used tariffs to rebalance world trade and pressure adversaries and allies to end foreign wars, but a pending Supreme Court case could limit presidential authority by arguing that tariffs constitute taxes on the American people that require congressional approval.
In his Truth Social post, Trump noted, "If the Supreme Court rules against us on tariffs, for any reason, the amount that we actually have to pay back would be hundreds of billions of dollars. Plus, this does not include the cost of ‘paying back’ the money that countries and companies have invested in building factories, plants, and equipment in order to avoid paying the tariffs."
He emphasized, "All of these investments add up to trillions of dollars! It would be a complete mess, and very difficult for our country to pay for."
President Trump's administration has been enjoying a boom with 5.4% GDP growth in the most recent quarter, but he acknowledged the ambiguity of how tariffs are calculated.
Trump added in his post, "Anyone who tells you this can be done quickly and easily is making a false, inaccurate, or completely misunderstood answer to this very large and complex question."
He explained, "It may not be possible, but if it is, the amount is so large it would take years just to figure out exactly how much, and even then, who to pay and when and where."
Supreme Court justices heard arguments in November regarding Trump's tariffs after lower courts ruled that his imposition of tariffs on foreign imports exceeded his authority.
The Supreme Court announced on Friday that it would not rule, meaning a decision could come soon.
While the Trump administration hopes the Supreme Court will rule in its favor in the case challenging the legality of broad global tariffs imposed by the president, they are also considering what actions they could take if the court rules against them, White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett said Friday.
"We expect to win, and if we don't win, we know that there are other means to get to the same outcome," Hassett said in a TV interview.
He revealed that the administration held a conference call with senior officials on Thursday night to discuss future actions.
