Danish intelligence warns of Russian and Chinese military objectives in Greenland

On the 14th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump shared a report by Just the News, citing an assessment by Danish intelligence agencies, and urged NATO to support the initiative to purchase Greenland. The report warned of China and Russia's interest in Greenland's territory.
President Trump posted on Truth Social, "NATO: Tell Denmark to get rid of them right now! Not two dog sleds! Only America can do it!!!" He added, "Danish intelligence warned last year about Russian and Chinese military objectives in Greenland and the Arctic."
President Trump's request came in response to a Just the News article citing a report from the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (DDIS) dated October 2025.
The report stated, "China is preparing for a military presence in the Arctic," and "China's long-term Arctic interests include Greenland."
The "Intelligence Outlook 2025" report on the security of the Kingdom of Denmark, released last month, warned in detail that "China is preparing for a military presence in the Arctic" and that "China's long-term Arctic interests include Greenland." The report focused on China's aerial, maritime, and submarine activities in the Arctic.
The Danish intelligence report assessed that Chinese and Russian military forces are cooperating more closely in the Arctic, demonstrating the strengthening of the "Dragon-Bear" alliance between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The report pointed out that Russia is using all available means to monitor and map the waters between Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and the UK "as part of its preparation for a potential confrontation with NATO," and that the Kremlin is deploying submarines, ships, and aircraft near Greenland.
The U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI)'s 2025 Annual Threat Assessment also detailed Russia and China's ambitions in the Arctic region, specifically noting that both countries have specific strategic interests in Greenland.
The U.S. Department of Defense's Arctic Strategy, drafted in 2024 during the Biden administration, also warned of the potential for increased military cooperation between Russia and China in the Arctic region.
The report clearly stated that Russia is positioning aerial and maritime assets near Greenland's coast, noting that "despite the significant geographical distance, Russia periodically deploys submarines, surface vessels, and aircraft in the waters near and between Greenland and the Faroe Islands." It added that Moscow is using civilian vessels navigating waters near Greenland "to carry out missions such as surveillance on behalf of the Russian state."
The Danish intelligence report stated that "Chinese companies have shown interest in investing in Greenland, but this has not yet led to tangible results." It added, "Nevertheless, China's long-term Arctic interests include Greenland, and cooperation with Greenland is expected to continue, particularly not only in research but also in commercial ventures."
The intelligence assessment stated, "For the United States, the Arctic is the most critical and prioritized early warning system in the event of great power conflict with Russia or China." The report also mentioned that the radar system at the U.S. Thule Air Base in northern Greenland "plays a crucial role in detecting hostile missiles en route to the U.S. homeland."
The Danish intelligence report described the North Atlantic as a "gateway to the Arctic" and stated that "Russia is using all available means to monitor and map the waters between Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and the UK." The report assessed that "such surveillance is part of preparations for a potential conflict with NATO."
The report also presented "possible routes for long-range missiles in case of war," stating clearly that "the shortest route between North America and Russia is through the Arctic," and commented, "This map shows possible routes for missiles Russia could launch towards the United States."
The missile launch routes presented by Danish intelligence included paths through Alaska, Canada, the Arctic Circle, and Greenland.
The intelligence assessment also stated that "China is pursuing the ability to operate submarines in the Arctic," explaining that one reason is that "the Arctic provides an ideal location for launching nuclear missiles to targets throughout the Northern Hemisphere due to the short flight times, making it difficult to defend," and "also because submarines can easily hide under the Arctic ice."
The report stated that the ability to operate such submarines under the Arctic ice cap is desired by both the United States and Russia, and "China has also become determined to acquire this capability," explaining the reason for China's "growing interest" in developing such capabilities in the Arctic.
In this regard, the intelligence assessment clearly stated that "China is preparing for a military presence in the Arctic," emphasizing that "Chinese icebreakers and research vessels are operating in the Arctic and have conducted joint patrol exercises in the region with Russia," and that "China aims to develop independent military operational capabilities in the Arctic."
The map displayed "the most frequently used maritime routes north of Russia," including shipping lanes through the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska, the northern coast of Russia, and shipping lanes crossing between the Nordic countries and Greenland.
The intelligence report highlighted the intentions of Russia and China regarding the Arctic region, particularly their aim to secure key submarine bases from which nuclear weapons could be launched towards the United States in the event of war.
The report also stated that Russia "intends to exploit the vast natural resources within its Arctic territories."
On Sunday the 11th, President Trump stated on Air Force One that Greenland should negotiate with the United States, criticizing Denmark's ability to protest Greenland's autonomy.
Trump said, "Greenland needs to come to the negotiating table because they don't want Russia or China to take over," adding, "Greenland's defense is basically just two dog sleds. Do you know that? Do you know what Greenland's defense is? It's two dog sleds."
The leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement earlier this month, stating, "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. Issues concerning Denmark and Greenland can only be decided by Denmark and Greenland."
Greenland's five major political parties issued a joint statement on Friday, stating, "As leaders of Greenlandic political parties, we once again urge the United States to end its contemptuous attitude towards our country."
"We do not want to be Americans, nor do we want to be Danes. We want to be Greenlanders," both sides stated.
The Foreign Ministers of Greenland and Denmark are scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday.
