Pop star Madonna strongly supported Iranian protesters on Thursday and expressed gratitude for the freedoms she enjoys in the United States.
Madonna posted a reflection on her recent trip to Morocco with her family on Instagram, stating that Americans "take for granted" their freedoms and adding that she hopes for the same freedoms in Iran.
"As I reflect on my time spent in Morocco during my vacation, I think of everyone fighting for the much-needed revolution in Iran and who are willing to sacrifice their lives for what they believe in. We take so much for granted. I do too," she said.
She continued, "The freedom to travel the world. The freedom to wear what you want. The freedom to ride a horse across the desert. The freedom to speak your mind without fear of retribution, torture, or even death. The freedom to sing. The freedom to dance. The freedom to choose my own spiritual path, not that of another. Iranian women do not have these freedoms. I am with them."
Madonna concluded with a loud cry of "FREE IRAN!"
"The people of Iran have not known freedom for centuries. I cannot truly say I know the suffering they have endured, but my heart and my prayers are with the people of Iran. This is the time. Be strong! I am with Iran. Let their voices be heard. Free Iran!" she concluded, accompanied by an Iranian flag emoji.
Madonna concluded her post with an Iranian flag emoji. The remarks stood out due to the relatively small number of A-list celebrities who have addressed the current unrest.
Madonna is among a very small number of celebrities who have publicly supported the protesters. Many of these protesters have lost their lives.
CBS News reported, "As phone calls within the Islamic Republic resumed, two sources, including one inside Iran, told CBS News on Tuesday that between at least 12,000 and up to 20,000 people had been killed."
According to Breitbart News, British rock star Yungblud also voiced support for the protesters.
