President Donald Trump has reiterated his demand for control over Greenland, stating in a letter to the Norwegian Prime Minister that he no longer feels "obligated to think solely of peace" because he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
The letter, which the U.S. administration has widely shared with other countries, was a response to a brief message from Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere and Finnish President Alexander Stubb opposing Trump's decision, according to a statement from Prime Minister Stoere.
The two leaders had sent messages opposing President Trump's decision to impose tariffs on European allies who refused to accept the U.S. takeover of Greenland. Earlier, President Trump had announced tariffs of 10% on countries opposing the U.S. acquisition of Greenland, with the possibility of raising them to 25% later.
According to Stoere's statement, Stoere and Stubb had pointed out the need to refrain from excessive rhetoric in their message and requested a phone call with President Trump. Trump's reply arrived shortly after they sent their message.
In the letter obtained by Reuters, President Trump wrote, "Dear Jonas: Since your country decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize, despite the fact that I have prevented more than eight wars, I no longer feel obligated to think solely of peace. Although peace will always be my priority, I can now think of what is good and appropriate for the United States."
Trump has publicly sought the Nobel Peace Prize, but the award last year went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
Stoere stated, as reported by Reuters, that he had "made it clear several times to Trump that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the independent Norwegian Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government."
Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump as a gesture of gratitude during a White House meeting last week, but the Norwegian Nobel Committee has stated that the prize cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked.
In his message to Prime Minister Stoere, President Trump questioned Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland once again, asking, "Why does Denmark 'own' the land, when they cannot protect it from Russia or China? In the first place, why did they even have 'ownership'?"
He also challenged Denmark's sovereignty, stating, "There is no documented record, but only one ship landed there hundreds of years ago. We have also landed ships there."
According to Reuters, Denmark's sovereignty over the vast, mineral-rich island is substantiated by a series of binding legal documents, including a treaty signed in 1814. The United States has repeatedly acknowledged Greenland as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the outlet added.
The United States first proposed purchasing Greenland from Denmark in 1832 by former President Andrew Jackson, and has since shown continued interest in acquiring the island for geopolitical reasons.
President Trump continued, "I have done more for NATO than anyone since its inception. Now NATO must do something for the United States. The world will not be safe unless we have full and absolute control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT."
