President Donald Trump met with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at the White House Monday night, after the appointment of Tom Homan as the federal immigration enforcement chief in Minnesota.
The meeting in the Oval Office, which lasted nearly two hours, underscored the administration's determination to restore order and refocus on immigration enforcement following the violent events in Minneapolis and a fatal confrontation involving federal agents, according to Newsmax.
According to The New York Times, President Trump met with Nielsen, senior advisor Corey Lewandowski and other top White House officials to review future actions following the shooting death of Alex Freier during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation over the weekend.
Despite critics and mainstream media claiming Nielsen's position was in jeopardy, sources told The New York Times that President Trump had not signaled that her job was at risk.
Instead, the meeting reflected concerns about escalating tensions and a desire to ensure that enforcement operations were effective, disciplined, and consistent with long-standing ICE practices, Newsmax reported.
On Monday morning, President Trump announced the deployment of Homan, a veteran law enforcement official widely respected among immigration enforcement officers, as the federal operations chief in Minnesota.
The move was widely interpreted as a signal that the president wanted experienced leadership on the ground amid backlash from activist groups and local officials opposed to immigration enforcement.
Homan has long advocated for targeted arrests of known criminals rather than indiscriminate raids, a strategy supporters credit with reducing violence while maintaining law and order.
His deployment came amid attempts by Democrats and progressive activists to portray ICE agents as reckless, despite the dangerous situations they routinely face.
Nielsen has been a key figure in Trump's immigration enforcement policies and has strongly defended the agents involved in the Minneapolis incident.
Critics have focused on an early statement describing Freier as a threat, but administration officials say the agents were responding to a volatile and rapidly evolving situation — a reality often downplayed in media coverage.
Concurrently, the administration is reassigning Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino from Minneapolis to another area, according to The New York Times.
Bovino, known for his hard-line approach, had also drawn criticism for his blunt assessments of threats to agents.
Homeland Security officials pushed back against reports that Bovino had been demoted, emphasizing that he remains a trusted figure in the Trump administration.
The presence of Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, spokeswoman Caroline Levitt, and Director of Communications Stephen Cheung at the Oval Office meeting suggested a consistent strategy from the White House to prioritize law and order over appeasing critics.
Indeed, President Trump told reporters he encountered leaving the White House that he believed Nielsen was "doing a very good job," adding, "The border is totally secure."
When a reporter asked if Nielsen would resign or be forced out, President Trump responded, "No."
Several Democratic lawmakers had publicly called for Nielsen's impeachment, raising concerns about the use of force by federal agents and the administration's approach to immigration enforcement.
"There's a major investigation going on," President Trump said. "I want to see the results of that investigation. I hope it's a fair and honest investigation."
Trump also pointed to Freier's possession of a firearm as a key factor in the confrontation.
“You can’t have guns. You can’t bring guns in. You’re not supposed to do that. It’s a very sad thing,” he said.
Federal authorities have yet to release details of their investigation, and the Department of Homeland Security stated it is cooperating with ongoing investigations into both incidents.
