The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday that federal immigration enforcement agents have been targeted in more than 180 vehicle attacks since President Donald Trump took office.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that employees of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were subjected to a total of 182 vehicle attacks between January 21, 2025, and January 24, 2024.
During that period, ICE agents reported 68 vehicle attacks, a 3,300% increase from the two incidents reported in the same period last year.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) employees reported 114 vehicle attacks during the same period, a 124% increase from 51 incidents the previous year.
"Sanctuary politicians who compare Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the Nazi Gestapo, slave patrols, and secret police, and who encourage illegal immigrants to evade arrest, have incited violence against law enforcement officers," said Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, Trish McLaughlin, in a statement.
In September 2025, DHS announced that an ICE agent fired his weapon to protect his life while being dragged by a vehicle driven by an undocumented immigrant.
DHS stated that Secretary of State Kristi Noem made it clear that immigration enforcement will continue without interruption, that ICE and federal agencies will enforce the law, and that anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer will face the severest punishment permitted by law.
Meanwhile, Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, "If you were attacked by a masked person, you might have thought you were being kidnapped. In such cases, shooting to protect yourself could be considered self-defense."

Nadler sparked controversy by claiming that President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration "incited fascism on the streets" and describing ICE agents as "masked thugs."
These remarks come after recent fatalities involving federal agents.
Federal authorities stated that Rene Gool was shot and killed by an ICE agent last month while trying to evade arrest for obstructing an immigration enforcement operation by driving away in a vehicle.
Officials said Gool used her car to block federal agents on a residential street, and when she drove her car toward an agent, the agent fired in self-defense.
Weeks later, Alex Fretti was shot and killed in Minneapolis while interfering with an ICE operation, leading some Democrats to call for the abolition of ICE.
Vice President JD Vance condemned Nadler's remarks as "despicable."
In a post on X, the Vice President wrote about the remarks of the retiring Democratic congressman, "Jerry Nadler, one of the top Democrats in the House, is publicly inciting the shooting of federal law enforcement officers. It is clear that the left-wing media will give this incident extensive coverage, given such despicable behavior from an elected official."
