U.S. President Donald Trump [Washington Reuters=Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 5th (local time) that an agreement to end the war in Ukraine was nearly reached.
Speaking at a National Prayer Breakfast event in Washington D.C. on that day, President Trump stated, "We are working very hard to end that whole war. We are very close to the end. We've almost done it."
While President Trump has consistently expressed confidence in ending the Ukrainian war, his remarks on this day are noteworthy as it coincides with the second meeting held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine for peace talks.
Although the trilateral negotiations did not result in a peace agreement on this day, progress has been made, including an agreement to exchange 314 prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine, with further meetings planned in the near future.
In his speech on this day, President Trump also overtly disparaged his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, and boasted about the achievements made during his first term in office.
He said, "During the Biden administration, other countries laughed at us and exploited us with tariffs. Now we can impose tariffs. I hope to get a Supreme Court ruling allowing that, because we are making hundreds of billions of dollars."
President Trump's remarks are interpreted as subtly pressuring the Supreme Court's ongoing deliberation on the 'illegality of reciprocal tariffs (tariffs by country)' to conclude that the application of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which he used to impose tariffs, is lawful.
President Trump previously stated in an interview with the press that his comment about not being able to go to heaven was "said in jest," and added, "Actually, I think I might be able to go to heaven." He then claimed that while he is not a perfect person, he has done a tremendous amount of good for perfect people.
Previously, President Trump had made frequent remarks about heaven.
In an interview with Fox News in August of last year, he expressed a desire to save people by ending the war in Ukraine, saying, "I want to go to heaven if I can." In October of the same year, while on the presidential plane en route to Israel, he told reporters, "I don't think I'm going to make it to heaven. I don't think I'm heaven-bound."
