Heo Sik, a member of the Incheon Metropolitan Council, has published "Heo Sik's Jemulpo Renaissance," a book containing a vision for regional development through the revitalization of the neglected old downtown area and the establishment of 'Jemulpo Port'.
The book sketches a future blueprint for 'Jemulpo Port,' which will be created by integrating Jung-gu and Dong-gu, the historical centers of Incheon's modern culture and economy. It also presents concrete alternatives and policies for the successful implementation of the 'Jemulpo Renaissance' project, which Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok is pursuing.
In the book, author Heo Sik proposes an execution strategy to overcome the population decline and depopulation phenomenon experienced by Incheon's old downtown area, and to transform it into a vibrant city where people and capital flow again.
In particular, it vividly records the status and behind-the-scenes stories of various local projects, both large and small, that he has personally overseen through on-site engagement.
The book is divided into six parts: △ The Resurrection of Jemulpo Has Already Begun △ The Rebirth of Dong-gu △ A Burden of 5 Minutes △ A City Where Children Stay Does Not Age △ A Lonely But Just Path, followed by △ Heo Sik & Lee Woong-gyu's Short Essay: 'Jemulpo Brand Identity'.
Part 6, in particular, offers a sharp critique, unusual for a metropolitan council member, of the central government's populism, the vested interests of privilege-seeking unions facing the implementation of the Yellow Envelope Act, and the reality of disappearing youth employment.
Councilman Heo Sik stated, "Jemulpo is the root of Incheon and a symbolic place of Korea's modernization." He added, "This book contains the records of my intense contemplation and practice to create a prosperous Jemulpo Port where our children can live with pride, not just by reminiscing about the past."

He added a strong message of hope, saying, "The Jemulpo Renaissance has already begun," and "Dong-gu and Jung-gu will be reborn as Jemulpo Port, reviving its past pride and glory."
Meanwhile, Councilman Heo Sik will hold a book launch event on Sunday, the 22nd, at 2 PM at the Harbor Park Hotel on Jemullyang-ro, Incheon, to meet directly with citizens and have an honest conversation about the future of Dong-gu and Jung-gu.
Councilman Heo Sik is currently a member of the Incheon Metropolitan Council (Construction and Transportation Committee) and has previously served as the first term chairman of the 9th Incheon Metropolitan Council and as a non-standing director of the Incheon Urban Development Corporation and the Korea Maritime Environment Corporation.
His major awards include the World Ilbo Award for Contribution to Community Development and the Freedom Medal from the World League for Freedom and Democracy (WLFD).
