The Japanese government is considering sending Ambassador Takeshi Okubo, who is in charge of reconstruction support for Gaza, to the first meeting of the Peace Committee led by U.S. President Donald Trump on the 19th (local time), Kyodo News reported on the 16th.
The intention is to show the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance by sending a Japanese representative to the meeting led by President Trump.
However, a Japanese government official stated that the plan is to defer joining the Peace Committee, similar to other Group of Seven (G7) nations besides the U.S.
The Peace Committee, officially launched at the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos, Switzerland, on January 22nd, originated from President Trump's peace initiative for Gaza.
President Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, on the 15th (local time) that participating countries in the Peace Committee have pledged to provide over $5 billion (approximately 7.2 trillion won) for humanitarian aid and reconstruction, and these details are expected to be announced at the first Peace Committee meeting in Washington D.C. on the 19th.
Kyodo News also reported that the Japanese government has no intention of participating in the financial aid.
