Robert Porter, an executive at Coupang headquarters, has drawn attention for being present at the Capitol during President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday the 24th.
According to a report by The Korea Economic Daily, Rob Porter, Coupang Inc.'s Chief Global Affairs Officer (CGAO) and the "ace pitcher" brought in to resolve the Coupang situation, attended the event alongside Harold Rogers, the interim representative for Coupang Korea.
The Korea Economic Daily, citing sources from the retail industry, reported that "Porter, the CGAO, was invited to this event due to his previous role as a senior White House aide during the first Trump administration, where he co-authored the 2018 State of the Union address."
He served as the Director of Domestic Policy and as an aide to the White House Chief of Staff in the first Trump administration's White House. During his tenure there, he was recognized as knowledgeable in international trade issues, including his efforts in 2017 to prevent the termination of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Porter resigned from his White House position in February 2018 following public allegations of domestic violence. However, these allegations were later proven to be false, and President Trump has reportedly continued to seek his counsel. Trump is known to view Porter as a victim of excessive media criticism.
Appointed as an advisor for external relations at Coupang Inc. in 2023, he became the Chief Global Affairs Officer (CGAO) last year, leading teams across North America, Asia, and Europe. He also participated as a speaker at APEC CEO 2025 held in Gyeongju.
At the APEC CEO event, Coupang Inc. was introduced as a Fortune 150 U.S. technology company providing e-commerce, advanced logistics, video streaming, food delivery, fintech, and intelligent cloud services in Asian and global markets.
Prior to his White House service, Porter held positions as Chief of Staff to Senator Orrin Hatch, Chief Counsel and Staff Director for the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee, and Clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Porter graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University, studied political theory at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and earned his master's degree from Harvard Law School, where he served as editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy.
His father, Roger Blaine Porter, was a White House Fellow (1974-75), Special Assistant to President Gerald Ford and Executive Director of the President's Council on Economic Policy (1974-77), and Chairman of the President's Domestic Policy Council under President George H.W. Bush (1989-1993). He also served as a professor at Harvard Kennedy School (1977-1985) and as the IBM Professor of Business and Government at Harvard University (1985-2011).
