U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on the 2nd (local time) that Iran would have already become a nuclear power if he had not broken the "nuclear deal" (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPOA) with Iran.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social that day, President Trump said, "If I hadn't ended Obama's terrible JCPOA, Iran would have already secured nuclear weapons 3 years ago."
He continued, "It was the most dangerous deal we have ever made," and argued, "If it had been allowed to remain in place, the world would look completely different today."
The JCPOA was concluded in 2015 during the administration of Barack Obama, after lengthy negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, including the United States, and Germany. It stipulated that Iran would allow nuclear inspections and limit its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
After taking office, President Trump unilaterally decided to withdraw from the JCPOA in 2018, citing issues such as sunset clauses, and imposed high-intensity sanctions against Iran. In response, Iran accelerated uranium enrichment, eventually facing airstrikes from the United States and Israel.
President Trump wrote, "You can blame Barack 'Hussein' Obama and sleepy Joe Biden (former president)."
This appears to be an assertion that the Iranian nuclear crisis escalated due to the conciliatory policies of presidents from the Democratic Party.
