Iranian officials stated last month that they possessed enough enriched nuclear fuel to build 11 nuclear bombs, according to envoy Steve Witkoff.
Witkoff told Fox News that during indirect negotiations, the Iranian delegation openly admitted to possessing approximately 460 kg of uranium enriched to 60% purity. This amount, with further refinement, could produce 11 nuclear weapons.
According to Witkoff, these admissions were made with "no shame at all" and were presented as part of Tehran's initial negotiating position.
The talks, which began in Oman on February 6 and concluded in Geneva on Thursday, were seen as a last-ditch effort to find a diplomatic solution before President Donald Trump resorted to military action.
Witkoff and Jared Kushner represented the U.S. side in the negotiations.
"In the first meeting, the Iranian negotiators told us directly that they have 460 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium, and they know they can make 11 bombs with that," Witkoff said on Fox News.
He added that Iranian officials claimed an "inalienable right" to enrich uranium.
Witkoff stated that the U.S. delegation strongly pushed back, with President Trump responding that the U.S. believed it had an "inalienable right to fully block your pathway."
He described Tehran's stance as defiant, and it quickly became apparent that a meaningful agreement would be difficult, if not impossible.
According to Witkoff, Iran possesses about 10,000 kilograms of fissile material, including uranium enriched to 60% and 20%.
He warned that uranium enriched to 60% could be converted to weapons-grade 90% purity in about one to 10 days. Uranium enriched to 20% could be converted in a matter of weeks, he added.
Estimates from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as cited by CBS News, show that Iran has amassed a significant stockpile of 60% enriched uranium, far exceeding what is needed for civilian energy production, as of mid-2025.
The UN watchdog stated that an additional 92.5 pounds (about 42 kg) of 60% enriched uranium would be sufficient to produce one nuclear weapon.
Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, and U.S. intelligence agencies have previously assessed that Tehran has not restarted a formal nuclear weapons program that it halted in 2003, but Iran's rapid expansion of uranium enrichment has alarmed Western officials.
Satellite imagery and IAEA reports show that activities continue at nuclear facilities that the U.S. military has previously struck.
President Trump ordered strikes on Iran's major nuclear facilities last year, stating that the attacks "completely destroyed" critical infrastructure. He has repeatedly emphasized that the U.S. will prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Witkoff revealed that the U.S. administration offered Iran a deal for 10 years of nuclear fuel in exchange for Iran abandoning its enrichment of nuclear fuel and dismantling its missile and proxy attack programs, but Iran rejected the offer.
"They were full of pride," Witkoff said of the Iranian negotiators. "It was very clear that they were not interested in doing anything other than maintaining their enrichment of uranium for the purpose of weaponization."
