The Ministry of National Defense's plans to integrate the Army, Navy, and Air Force academies and relocate the Korea Military Academy to a regional area have drawn strong opposition from military veterans and retired personnel organizations. They criticize the rushed implementation as shaking the foundation of the military and an "experimentation with national security."

The Alumni Association of the Korea Military Academy and 13 former Army chiefs of staff, among other retired generals, recently issued a statement opposing the consolidation into a (tentative name) Korea Armed Forces Academy. They argued that it "will undermine the unique identity and traditions of each service, thereby weakening the military's combat power."

In particular, they accused the Ministry of National Defense of secretly pushing the plan without communication with the military and experts. They urged, "The rushed implementation, driven by a 'let's just merge them' mentality, must stop immediately, and the issue should be addressed through public discussion and deliberation from the ground up."

There is also strong opposition to the plan to relocate the Korea Military Academy to a regional area, such as Jangseong County in Jeonnam Province. A parent association of the cadets criticized the move as "pushing the cradle of national security, the academy, based on political and regional development logic," and stated that "cadets are experiencing deep self-doubt because of this."

Media outlets interpret this situation as a clash of values between the Ministry of National Defense, which seeks efficiency in the name of defense reform, and military veterans, who aim to preserve military traditions and security stability.

As the controversy escalates, the Ministry of National Defense has attempted to de-escalate by stating that "nothing has been finalized regarding the relocation or consolidation of the Korea Military Academy." However, the backlash from within and outside the military, fueled by concerns about a security vacuum, is not expected to subside easily in the near future.
