The 73rd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement is being commemorated at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. on the 27th (local time). [Washington Correspondent Corps] A bipartisan resolution has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to honor the sacrifices of Korean War veterans in commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement.

Representatives Lois Frankel (D-FL) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) introduced the resolution on the 27th (local time), which honors the contributions and sacrifices of Korean War veterans and Korean Defense Veterans.

The resolution notes that "the Korean War has become a 'forgotten war' for many Americans," and points out that "many of those who served in the Korean War returned home without receiving the welcome and honors that the heroes of World Wars I and II received."

It also mentions that 36,574 U.S. service members were killed and 103,284 were wounded during the Korean War.

The resolution honors not only Korean War veterans but also those who lost their lives in the process of maintaining the armistice regime after the agreement was signed, referring to them as "Korean Defense Veterans."

The resolution states that even after the signing of the armistice on July 27, 1953, the Korean Peninsula remains technically in a state of war, noting that approximately 25,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea today and that hundreds of service members have lost their lives in the process of maintaining the armistice regime.

It further emphasizes that "Korean War veterans and Korean Defense Veterans deserve to be recognized by all American citizens for their honorable service in defense of democracy and freedom, both during the Korean War and in the years since."

It also declares that "the people of the United States and the Republic of Korea express their eternal gratitude to the Korean War veterans and Korean Defense Veterans."

Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Susie Lee (D-NV), and Grace Meng (D-NY) also participated as co-sponsors of the resolution.

Commemorative messages from lawmakers also followed.

In a statement posted on X, the House Republican Conference stated, "We honor the 1.8 million Americans who answered the call of the 'Forgotten War,'" adding, "They fought in bitter cold, amidst constant gunfire, and through unimaginable hardships to ensure that freedom would endure."

The statement continued, "Their courage continues to resonate across generations. We will never forget their sacrifice," and added, "We thank all Korean War veterans and their families."

Senator Jim Risch (R-ID), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stated on X, "On this Korean War Armistice Day, we remember those who dedicated themselves to answering the call of their country," adding, "I hope we never forget the courage and sacrifice they showed to defend our nation's freedom and enduring values."

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) remarked, "Their courage, selflessness, and sacrifice in defense of freedom will never be forgotten," and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) stated, "We honor the bravery and sacrifice of the courageous Americans who fought for freedom and democracy on the Korean Peninsula."
