U.S. President Donald Trump issued a message emphasizing the robust ROK-U.S. alliance on the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement.
In a message released on the 27th (local time), President Trump stated, "More than 70 years have passed since the war ended, but the United States and the Republic of Korea remain united under an ironclad alliance, forged by shared sacrifice and bound by our unwavering love of liberty."
President Trump emphasized, "This bond is a pillar of peace and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific and a solemn commitment to our allies in Asia that we will fight together against the forces of evil and oppression that threaten world peace."
He further added, "The communist ambitions that once sought to conquer the Korean Peninsula are now rearing their ugly heads in the West, but our resolve will not waver," continuing, "Communism is the fierce enemy of free citizens, and my administration will meet these threats with unflinching strength to defend freedom both at home and abroad, ensuring that liberty triumphs over tyranny across the globe."
Regarding the U.S. military's participation in the Korean War, President Trump remarked, "With unparalleled strength and indomitable resolve, the United States took up arms to prevent communism from seizing the free world, and this noble cause was fulfilled in victory."
He also detailed the sacrifices made by U.S. troops during the Korean War, adding, "Our Republic will always remember the sacred truth inscribed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial: 'Freedom is not free.'"
Observers suggest that President Trump's message, which highlights signs of communism spreading in the West, is aligned with his strategy for the November midterm elections. Ahead of the midterms, President Trump has been intensifying his offensive against communism, branding the Democratic Party—where democratic socialist influence is growing—as "communists."
While last year's message from President Trump included details about applying maximum pressure and sanctions on North Korea to negotiate denuclearization, the release of U.S. hostages, and the repatriation of remains of U.S. service members, those points were omitted this time.
Also absent from this year's message was the mention of the inter-Korean summit at Panmunjom, which was included in last year's message—notably the fact that in 2019, during his first term, he became the first sitting U.S. president to step into North Korean territory across the Demilitarized Zone.
On July 27, 2017, the first year of his first administration, President Trump commemorated the 64th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice by proclaiming the day "National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day," and he continued to issue proclamations to mark the occasion every year until he left office in 2020.
