New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (Democrat) announced that 6,660 non-citizens were mistakenly registered as voters due to a software glitch in the state's motor vehicle registration system.

Governor Sherrill stated that the system erroneously recorded these individuals as citizens, despite the applicants having correctly indicated that they were not U.S. citizens.

Sherrill noted that the error occurred between June 2023 and June 2024, during the tenure of former Governor Phil Murphy (Democrat), and that fewer than 400 of those mistakenly registered actually cast votes.

In a statement obtained by the New Jersey Globe, Sherrill said, "It was through no fault of their own, but the system registered them."

This disclosure comes just five days after President Donald Trump warned in a prime-time address that tens of thousands of non-citizens had registered to vote in New Jersey.

Trump claimed there were 35,152 non-citizens registered on the voter rolls in Pennsylvania and estimated that approximately 250,000 might be registered across New Jersey, California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania combined.

Sherrill stated that she became aware of the issue last week and immediately ordered an investigation and the removal of everyone who was improperly registered during that period.

She said, "I also directed that all residents who were incorrectly added to the voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024 be removed," adding, "The new MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission) administrator I appointed has begun the process of replacing the vendor responsible for managing the system."

Governor Sherrill confirmed that the state government has already removed the incorrect registration data.

She explained, "Preliminary analysis shows that fewer than 400 people who registered to vote for the first time due to the error participated in an election," adding that "they were registered as Democrats, Republicans, and independent voters, and were scattered across the state."

Despite acknowledging the flaws in the New Jersey state system, Governor Sherrill criticized President Trump.

She stated, "The difference is simple: When we find a problem, we don't hide it, deny it, or create conspiracy theories. We investigate the problem, fix it, and inform the public. That is what accountability and good governance look like, and that is exactly what our administration is doing."

The Trump administration has requested that state governments submit their voter rolls to the federally operated Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to verify if non-citizens are included. New Jersey is currently in litigation with the federal government for refusing to utilize the SAVE system for voter roll verification.

On Friday the 19th, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin issued an ultimatum letter to four states—New Jersey, California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania—giving them until July 30 to cooperate with rigorous identity verification using the SAVE system, raising the possibility that approximately 250,000 non-citizens are registered in those states.

New Jersey has previously resisted federal litigation by arguing that SAVE-based batch verification amounts to voter suppression. However, with the confirmation of actual non-citizen registrations and voting instances due to the state's own licensing agency errors, pressure from the federal government to submit voter rolls and attacks from the Republican National Committee (RNC) are expected to intensify.
