There is a familiar revolving door of elites within South Korean conservative politics. The core keywords of this revolving door are always the same: KDI (Korea Development Institute), Seoul National University's Department of Economics, overseas study, Seocho-gap, and Daegu.
This combination is not merely a list of career accomplishments. It is the safest, least likely to fail, and most legacy-preferred path to power in South Korean conservative politics.
KDI: A Power Preparatory School Masquerading as Political Integrity
KDI is more than just a government-funded research institution in South Korean conservative politics. It is the most powerful laundering course, bestowing the mantle of a 'neutral expert' before entry into politics.
The progression from Lee Hye-hoon to Yoo Seong-min to Yoon Hee-sook is not a coincidence. The fact of being from KDI always functions in this way.
"I am not a politician, but a policy expert."
This sentence is a political license optimized for evading responsibility. If they fail, they can say, "Politics didn't suit me," and if they succeed, they gain the myth that "politics is different when experts lead it."
Seoul National University Economics & Overseas Doctorate: The Korean 'Elite Certification Package'
Seoul National University's Department of Economics and a doctoral degree from overseas. This combination remains a symbol of unquestionable authority in Korean politics.
The problem is that this background has almost no correlation with actual political performance. Nevertheless, they are always protected under the frames of being 'rational,' 'logical,' and 'moderate.'
These frames are not easily broken, even in the face of policy failures or political opportunism. This is because South Korean society is still structured in a way that mistakenly equates academic background and overseas study with inherent ability.
Seocho-gap: A Symbolic 'Prize District' of Gangnam Elite Politics
Seocho-gap in Seoul is more than just a constituency. It is the showroom for Gangnam elite politics. It is a district where: △conservative sentiment is stable, △understanding of economic issues is considered high, and △voters prioritize a candidate's 'resume' over their 'personal charm.'
Therefore, Seocho-gap has always been a runway for figures with weak political stamina but impressive resumes to land safely.
The transition from Lee Hye-hoon to Yoon Hee-sook is symbolic. Regardless of differing political stances or personalities, the brand of KDI, economist, and rational conservative is seamlessly inherited.
Daegu: The Ultimate Insurance, or a Political Refuge
And the final safety net in this elite course is Daegu. When they fail to gain political traction in Seoul, or when it becomes difficult to sustain their position in Gangnam, these elites always look to Daegu as the bastion of traditional conservatism, 'a district where election is still possible.'
Daegu is utilized as a space for insurance rather than challenge. Consequently, their conservatism always remains about managing regional votes, not about the lives of the region's people.
The problem is not the individuals, but 'path dependency.' Criticizing figures like Lee Hye-hoon, Yoo Seong-min, or Yoon Hee-sook solely as individual opportunists is inaccurate.
The real issue is the structure where South Korean conservative politics has allowed almost no other successful models besides this path. △Politicians with field experience, △community-based activists, △party member-type politicians, △practical talents from non-elite backgrounds... These individuals cannot even access this revolving door.
This is why South Korean conservatism always appears to lack new figures, and ultimately, the same faces, the same resumes, and the same rhetoric are endlessly replayed.
The five keywords: KDI, Seocho-gap, Daegu, Seoul National University, and overseas study, symbolize the way South Korean conservatism has aged most safely.
Now, we must ask: As long as this elite revolving door continues to turn, can conservatism truly renew itself? And more fundamentally, for how much longer will politics be chosen based on résumés?

해방 이후 지금의 대한민국을 일으킨 사람들 중에서 가장 강력한 리더 집단이 서울대라고는 말할 수 없지 않을까 싶다.
오히려 다른 집단이 그 역할을 했다고 생각한다.
살만한 세상이 되니 그들이 나서서 세상을 혼탁하게 하고 있는 것 같다.
