President Trump speaking with reporters [AP=Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 23rd (local time) that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors would be deployed to Iran's nuclear facilities at an appropriate time.
Even as Iran denied the U.S. announcement that it had accepted IAEA nuclear inspections, President Trump reiterated his position by taking the resumption of inspections as a given fact, refuting Iran's stance.
Speaking to reporters at Reading Airport in Pennsylvania, where he arrived for an event, President Trump said, "They will be deployed to the site at an appropriate time" regarding the timing of the IAEA inspectors' visit to Iran.
Regarding Iran's statement that it had no plans for IAEA inspections, he said, "They are wrong," and added, "If they are right, I will cancel the meeting right now."
This statement is interpreted as a warning that the negotiations themselves could be jeopardized if Iran refuses IAEA inspections, following the first high-level meeting between the U.S. and Iran in Switzerland last weekend after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
U.S. Vice President JD Vance had announced at a press conference the previous day that "Iran has agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back to their country," and that inspection activities were scheduled to begin this week.
However, Iran has presented a different stance from the U.S., stating that it has not accepted any new obligations regarding nuclear matters.
On the same day, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that reports claiming Iran had accepted IAEA inspections of nuclear facilities that had previously been bombed by the U.S. were untrue, adding, "The resumption of inspections will be decided based on the ongoing negotiation process and its outcome."
