Kim Yo-jong, Vice Department Director of the Workers' Party of Korea and sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, issued a mocking message toward South Korea regarding the scaling back of combined ROK-U.S. military exercises under the instruction of U.S. President Donald Trump, describing Seoul's situation as a "pitiful state of being unable to play its favorite war games."

In a statement released via the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on the night of the 20th, Vice Director Kim stated, "At a single word from Trump suddenly ordering a reduction in drills, Seoul has been placed in a pitiful position where it must fold up its most beloved 'war game' set."

Kim remarked that this reduction in joint drills is likely "the first 'extraordinary event' of its kind" for South Korea, pointing out the "reality of South Korea, which entrusts its national defense and security to outside forces while self-righteously claiming that it 'has more than enough capability to defend itself.'"

She further lashed out, stating, "This sudden incident is a deserved disaster brought on by the unrealistic and anachronistic delusions and security views of the South Korean authorities, who, blinded by blind faith in their master, have been incessantly flustered in trying to alter the regional power dynamics controlled by a nuclear power," calling it "retribution."

Regarding President Lee Jae-myung, who expressed "respect" for President Trump's order to scale back the exercises as a gesture of appeasement toward North Korea, Kim sarcastically commented, "His duplicitous words and actions, differing between the inside and the outside, clearly show the anxious and contradictory psyche of South Korea."

She added, "The reality currently witnessed by the world is that U.S. security support is no longer free," and suggested, "I think it would be better for them to use this opportunity to properly study their own thoroughly subservient position and find an answer for their survival instead."

While Kim Yo-jong disparaged the scaling back of the ROK-U.S. drills in her statement the previous night, she also mentioned the good relationship between Chairman Kim Jong-un and President Trump, leaving room for potential North Korea-U.S. dialogue.

Conversely, by sending a message of contempt toward South Korea, she is interpreted as signaling an intention not to engage with the South, framing them as two hostile states.

The 'Ulchi Freedom Shield' (UFS), the regular ROK-U.S. combined military exercise for the defense of the Korean Peninsula in the event of an emergency, will end early on the 21st.

The UFS exercise, which began on the 17th, was originally scheduled to run until the 27th, but following President Donald Trump’s order to scale it back, the exercise period was significantly reduced from 11 days to 5 days.

It is an unprecedented event in history that the duration and scale of an ongoing theater-level ROK-U.S. combined military exercise have been reduced.
