A recent weekly poll conducted by The Economist/YouGov reveals that only 8% of Democratic supporters view the United States as the "greatest" country in the world. 

In the same survey, 25% of respondents rated the U.S. as the "best" country, 20% considered it "one of the best countries," and 12% described it as "above average," meaning 57% viewed the U.S. positively. 

Twelve percent of respondents answered that the U.S. is "worse than average," 9% said it is "one of the worst countries," and 4% labeled it "the worst." 

Opinions diverged significantly based on political affiliation. Among Republican supporters, the proportion of those who consider the U.S. to be the greatest country was much higher at 52%, while 28% of Republican supporters categorized it as "one of the greatest countries." 

However, only 8% of Democratic supporters considered the U.S. to be the "greatest" country, and 16% described it as "one of the greatest countries." More surprisingly, 23% of Democratic supporters rated the U.S. as "worse than average" compared to other countries, 15% answered it is "one of the worst countries," and 4% stated that the U.S. is "the worst."

Thirteen percent of Democratic supporters described the U.S. as "about average," while 13% said it is "better than average."

Similarly, nearly one-quarter of voters who cast their ballots for Kamala Harris, who was defeated in the 2024 presidential election, rated the U.S. as "worse than average" compared to other nations, and 18% identified it as "one of the worst countries."

The situation was the complete opposite for Trump supporters: 54% rated the U.S. as the "greatest" country, and 27% called it "one of the greatest countries."

While not a single Trump supporter described the U.S. as the worst country, 5% of Harris supporters did so.

This survey, conducted from June 19 to 22, 2026, among 1,679 individuals, took place ahead of the U.S. 250th-anniversary celebrations and the opening of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall.

Meanwhile, another Economist/YouGov poll conducted a week earlier showed that nearly 4 out of 10 Democratic supporters feel "embarrassed" to be American.
