The nomination of six candidates for the 'National Election Commission Special Prosecutor,' tasked with investigating the ballot paper shortage during the June 3 local elections, was completed on the 12th.
According to political and legal circles, the Korean Bar Association and the Korean Association of Law Schools submitted their three respective special prosecutor candidates to the Public Recommendation Committee by the deadline that day.
Under the Special Prosecutor Act, the president of the Korean Bar Association and the chairman of the Korean Association of Law Schools must each select three candidates with at least 15 years of legal experience, as requested by the Public Recommendation Committee, and submit them in writing.
An official from the Public Recommendation Committee told Yonhap News, "The submission of candidates from both organizations was completed today," adding, "Due to the confidentiality obligations under the Special Prosecutor Act, it is difficult to disclose the identities of the nominated candidates."
The Public Recommendation Committee plans to review the investigative expertise and neutrality of the candidates at a meeting on the 14th and reach a consensus to recommend two candidates to the President.
The President will appoint one of the two recommended candidates as the special prosecutor.
